The Bergen Rolls Royce engine and crankshaft have the following major specifications

Inspection of Rolls Royce Engine Crankshaft undertaken by RA Power Solutions technicians

RA Power Solutions technicians boarded the vessel at JNPT Port, Mumbai India, and undertook the inspection of the crankshaft.

Following was the main observation

• On visual inspection, it was observed that the crankpin bearing of CR no. 3 was damaged and bearing material was found in the sump.
• On removal of the connecting rod, it was observed the connecting rod bearing was badly struck on the crankpin and even the bearing material was embedded in the crankpin diameter.
• After the removal of bearing material from the crankpin circumference the inspection of the crankpin was undertaken.
• The crankpin dimension was observed as follows
  1. The minimum diameter observed was 269.43 mm.
  2. Maximum diameter observed 269.89 mm.
• The hardness was checked and was observed within the limit.
• The crack detection of Rolls Royce Engine crank pin was conducted by MPI method and no crack or abnormality was observed.
• On visual inspection of the crank pin deep bearing line marks were observed.

Action taken by RA Power Solutions to repair the crankshaft of Bergen Rolls Royce Engine.

• The Grinding of crankpin no. 3 was undertaken to the step size of 1 mm. The final size after grinding was maintained at 269.00 mm.
• After the final grinding/ Polishing of the crankpin, all the parameters like taper, ovality, hardness, crack detection, and surface test were undertaken and a report in our standard format was prepared.
• The remaining crank pins were polished as rough surfaces and bearing line marks were observed. All crank pins were subject to the surface finish test and a surface finish of 11 Ra value was observed which is far better than the International standards.
• The connecting rod was inspected by our technicians and the Rolls Royce Engine after repair was put on load and satisfactory performance was observed.
