Inspection of MAN B&W STX 6L 23/30H crankshaft conducted by RA Power Solutions.

The crank pins were subject to dimensional inspection for taper and ovality.

The ovality ranging from 0.06 to 0.11 mm was observed on all six crank pins.

All the crank pins were subject to hardness test and hardness was observed from 219 to 231 on the HB scale which is within the limits.

All the crankpins were subject to crack detection by high intensity magna flux torch, no cracks or abnormalities were observed.

The deflection of crankpins was observed within limits.

On visual inspection, bearing line marks and a rough surface of the crankpin were observed.

Observations made by RA Power Solutions for repair of crankshaft for MAN B&W STX 6L 23/30H

The following action was taken for repair of the crankshaft of MAN B&W STX 6L 23/30H

All the crankpins were undersized to the first step size of 0.50 mm, and the final diameter of the crankpins was maintained at 184.50 mm after grinding and polishing.

The crank pins were polished and surface finish was maintained as per the international standards.

Save your crankshaft from rejection, contact RA Power Solutions for the right advice.

With the experience of more than four decades in the field of repair of crankshafts, we have realized that the crankshaft repair companies do not have the facilities to undertake the grinding of crank pins and main journals having small diameters and bearing widths. Their equipment is not designed to sit on the crank pin diameter due to the small bearing width.

Most of the time, these companies either reject the crankshaft for one or another reason otherwise give suggestions to send it to the workshop for repairs. With the advanced technological equipment, experience, and process RA Power Solutions has been successful in undertaking the grinding of crank pins and main journals having small diameters and bearing widths.

The above job was executed in July 2017 and is performing satisfactorily.

We have the pre and final crankshaft inspection reports undertaken on board the vessel duly signed and stamped by the chief engineer. These reports can be shared with clients on request. Take the direct benefit of our expertise and technology.
Following are the main observations during the inspection of the Crankshaft of MAN 7L 23/30 Engine

All the crankpins were subject to dimensional inspection for taper and ovality except crankpin no. 3, the ovality observed on all the crankpins was between 0.16 mm to 0.27 mm. In the case of crankpin no. 3, the ovality observed was 0.66 mm. The hardness of all crankpins was observed between 220 and 230 on the HB scale.

All the crankpins were subject to crack detection by the MPI method. High intensity, magna flux torch was used for MPI. No crack or abnormality was observed on crankpins except crankpin no. 3 on which multiple hairline cracks/ skin cracks measuring between 50 mm to 75 mm were observed.

On visual inspection bearing line marks were observed on all the crankpins, crankpin no. 3 had deep bearing line marks.

No damage on the radius fillet or lubricating oil hole was observed.

Execute repair of the crankshaft of MAN 7L 23/30 H Engine

All the crankpins except crankpin no. 3 was ground and polished to the undersize of 0.5 mm. In the case of crankpin no. 3, our technicians had no option but to reduce the diameter by 1.5 mm to remove the crack observed during the MPI.

All the crankpins were polished.

The crankshaft was fitted with 0.5 mm and 1.5 mm undersize bearings and the engine was put on operation.

The crankshaft of the MAN 7L 23/30 H Engine is performing satisfactorily.

It is observed that the crankshaft repair companies based in Europe, UK, and Singapore do not have the facilities and necessary equipment to undertake onsite grinding and polishing of small crankpin diameters and small bearing widths. The grinding of a small diameter crankpin and the bearing width requires a grinding tool that is compact enough to be placed on the crankpin journal. For example – a Crankpin has a diameter of 130 mm and, a bearing width of 56 mm. Complete tooling is required to be inserted from the limited space available of the engine block window and has to be placed on the crankpin bearing width.

Due to the non-availability of tooling with the leading crankshaft engine repair companies, they generally advise removing the crankshaft from the engine block and sending it to the workshop for grinding and polishing purposes. We have observed in some cases even advice for replacement of the crankshaft is also given. This suggestion works out to be very expensive and time-consuming, especially in this time of recession.

Compact onsite crankshaft grinding machine designed by RA Power Solutions

RA Power Solutions Pvt. Ltd. Is the only company in the world that designs and manufactures its crankshaft grinding machines in technical collaboration with a leading Italian company.

The grinding machine manufactured by us can easily grind onsite even with a small diameter of 35 mm and a bearing width of 25 mm. This is a technological revolution and advancement done by RA Power Solutions engineers out of their experience, knowledge, and passion to do something new and different.

It’s our business to undertake regular grinding and polishing of crankshafts all over the world. We are sharing below details of a few engine crankshafts that got damaged and were successfully repaired by us. On going through the crankpin diameter and crankpin bearing width, one will observe that they are quite small.
