Main observations of MAN B&W 7L32/40 Crankshaft Damage

1. On boarding the vessel at Boston Port, USA, our technicians inspected the damaged crankshaft.
2. To their surprise all the seven crankpins had deep bearing line marks, rough surface on checking of dimensions, and ovality ranging from 0.20MM to 0.26 MM was observed which is considered to be on the higher side. In case of three crankpins journal radius fillet profile of both side was damaged.
3. All the seven crankpins of MAN B&W 7L32/40 were subject to MPI for crack detection, No crack and abnormality was observed.
4. Hardness was checked and observed within limits as stipulated in the manual of MAN.

Action taken by RA Power Solutions for the successful repair of the Crankshaft of the MAN B&W 7L32/40

• The Ship management due to the prior commitment was not able to hold the vessel even for a day for the execution of onsite crankshaft repair. They requested that the repair of the crankshaft is to be executed only during the sailing of the vessel.
• The RA Power Solutions with more than 44 Years of experience have specially designed equipment, that can undertake the grinding of crankpins even while sailing the vessel. This is possible due to the construction/design of the equipment.
• The vessel was sailing from Boston to various ports in the United States of America up to the port of Panama.

• It was a challenging task to execute the repair while sailing and in a limited time period given by the ship’s owner.
• RA Power Solutions technicians executed the grinding of all seven crankpins having a standard diameter of 290.00 MM. All the crankpins were undersized by 0.5 MM and polished.
• After Grinding, the tolerance of the crankpin diameter was maintained within 0.02 MM with a surface finish of less than 15 RA value.
• A team of technicians from Poland was on the vessel and assembled the units in the shortest time possible.
• The MAN B&W 7L32/40 was successfully put into operation during the presence of our technicians. Our team disembarked at the port of Panama.
