										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>RA Power Solutions was advised about the failure of the two auxiliary engines <strong><a href="https://rapowersolutions.com/BlogDetails.aspx?blogname=Crankshaft-Repair-of-Daihatsu-5DC-17-Save-Crankshaft-from-Rejection">crankshaft of Daihatsu 5DC-17</a></strong> in the Suez Canal because of which the vessel was not able to sail. The owners of the vessel made a distress call for repair of the crankshaft. They checked from few European-based companies for grinding of the crankshaft but they couldn&#8217;t do the repairs because of the non-availability of equipment. The standard crank pin diameter is only 145 mm and the bearing width of 64 mm this needs very compact equipment to be placed on the damaged crank pin diameter to undertake grinding and polishing.</p>
<p>Two technicians with portable onsite crankshaft grinding machines were deputed to Cairo Egypt and boarded the vessel within 15 hrs of the first intimation call. This was possible as all our technicians have valid seamen books.</p>
<h2><strong>Daihatsu Auxiliary Engine 5DC-17 Inspection by RA Power</strong></h2>
<p>On undertaking the inspection excessive ovality ranging from 0.20 mm to 0.50 mm was observed in the case of both the crankshaft all other parameters like hardness, MPI, etc were observed within limits.</p>
<p>The grinding of AE#01 and AE# 03 crankshaft was undertaken by 1.0 mm undersize against the standard size of 145 mm. The diameter was reduced to 144 mm.</p>

It is very difficult to prepare tooling and equipment that can be placed on the crankpin diameter and grinding can be executed.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: 14pt;">RA Power Solutions technicians having valid Indian seaman books boarded the vessel at Hamburg port.</span></p>
<h3><strong>Following were the main observations of the crankpin of Daihatsu 5DC-17 </strong></h3>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: 14pt;">No inspection can be carried out as the bearing metal was stuck on the crankpins.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: 14pt;">The bearing metal was removed from all the crankpins by polishing them with the fine grinding media which is normally carried by our technicians.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: 14pt;">All the crankpin&#8217;s hardness was checked and was observed within limits. No crack was observed during the MPI inspection by high-intensity ultra-violet torch.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: 14pt;">The ovality and damage except for crank pin no. 3 was observed up to 0.6 mm and for crankpin no. 3 it was 1.26 mm.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: 14pt;">On going through the above readings and the manufacturer&#8217;s manual since the crankpin no. 3 was damaged beyond the last limit of 1.20 mm. The crankshaft was rejected.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: 14pt;">In this time of recession which shipping industries are going through, the owners requested RA Power Solutions to undertake the refurbishment of the crankshaft and save the crankshaft from rejection as they cannot afford to buy a new crankshaft costing in the range of 40,000 to 45,000 US dollar.</span></li>

<h3><strong>Action taken by RA Power Solutions to save the crankshaft of Daihatsu 5DC-17</strong></h3>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Since all other important parameters like hardness, and no traceability of crack, RA Power Solutions repaired the crankshaft by maintaining the following dimensions of the crankpin.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: 14pt;">All the crankpins except crankpin no. 3 were undersized by 0.8 mm.</span></li>
