Bearings for Popular Make of engines installed on vessels, such as main engines or auxiliary engines, are available with RA Power Solutions.

RA Power Solutions is a leading onsite crankshaft repair company, extending services for over 44 years all over the world. We understand the requirement of standard and undersize bearings especially after the grinding of the crankshaft is executed it is difficult to get the undersize bearings, as their delivery period is long and it is not possible for the ship owner to hold the vessel indefinitely.

RA Power Solutions in order to facilitate clients, especially from the shipping industries, maintain a large stock of crankpin/main journal bearings. The bearings are available with us in different undersizes, as recommended by the manufacturer.

In most cases, our technicians hand carry the undersize bearings with them and the same are assembled immediately after grinding of the damaged crankshaft is undertaken, this saves breakdown time. The bearings of most of the popular make and models are available.

Following are the main observations of the crankshaft of MAN Aux. Engine Model No. 9L 27/38

On visual inspection by our technicians, it was observed that crankpin no. 2 has a deep depression mark measuring about 40 x 25 mm.

The minimum and maximum dimensions of crankpin no. 2 were observed as following

Standard dimensions of crankpin: 250 mm

Minimum size observed: 247.80 mm

Thus the ovality of more than 2.2 mm was observed.

Our technicians reported that damage to the Crankpin is more as the micrometer is not able to take the reading due to the nature of the damage. The crank pin was subject to crack detection by MPI and no cracks were observed.

The hardness was taken off the crankpin. The hardness ranging between 260 to 300 on the HB scale was observed. On a few scattered areas, the hardness was as high as 616 on the HB scale.

Planning for Repair of Crankshaft of MAN Engine Model No. 9L 27/38

During the discussions with the technical staff of the vessel, it was informed that a crankshaft repair company from Singapore inspected the damaged crankpin no. 2. They observed higher hardness and have undertaken local grinding of the hard spots by a hand grinder. The exact depth of hand grinded area cannot be measured.

The decision was taken by RA Power technicians to undertake grinding of the crankpin.

Our technicians checked the hardness of the crank pin at every step while under-sizing it, to our surprise, the hardness was coming down as the grinding was done.

Our technicians have undertaken the grinding to the undersize of 4.0 mm and the maximum hardness observed is 328 mm.

The damaged crankpin has been successfully repaired.

Damaged to the crankpin by a Singapore-based company

Due to the lack of knowledge and experience the hand grinder was used to check the hardness which in turn rather damaged the crankpin. A crankshaft is the most expensive part of a diesel engine and experienced companies must be engaged for repair. It is our experience of forty-two years that hardness increases whenever there is a seizure of the bearings and in most cases it is a skin hardness that reduces after grinding is done.

The crank pin nos. two having a standard diameter of 130 mm was damaged and the minimum diameter observed was 129.79 mm.

From the above reading, the ovality observed was 0.21 mm which is considered to be on the higher side.

Few line marks were observed on the crank pin diameter.

The hardness of the crankpin was checked and was observed between 243 to 276 on the HB scale which is well within the limits.

The crankpin was also subject to a crack detection test by magnetic particle examination and no cracks were observed.

The deflection of the crankshaft was taken and was observed within limits.

Achievement RA Power Solutions in Successful Repair of the Crankshaft of MAN 6L 16/24 Auxiliary Engine

The most important aspect of the repair of the MAN 6L 16/24 auxiliary engine is that it has a small diameter of 130 mm and a bearing width of only 56 mm.

The crankshaft companies based in Europe and other countries do not have crankshaft grinding equipment which can sit on the crankpin having a bearing width as low as 56 mm. Hence, they reject the crankshaft on one excuse or another or suggest removing the crankshaft from the engine and sending it to the workshop for repairs.

RA Power Solutions is the only company that has the equipment available to work on the crankpin bearing width or main journal bearing width which is as low as 40 mm.

This technologically advanced latest generation of crankshaft grinding equipment is only available with us and have successfully repaired thousands of crankshaft all over the world in countries like Greece, Moldova, Belarus Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Cambodia, Colombia, Denmark, Ethiopia, Ghana, Haiti, etc.

The crank pin of the engine has a diameter of 130 mm with a bearing width of 56 mm.

All the crank pins had scoring marks and bearing line marks due to the seizure of the crankpin bearing.

The dimensional inspection was done and the crank pins had taper and ovality in the range of 0.2 mm to 0.4 mm.

The hardness was checked and was observed within the limits.

MPI check was done and few hairline cracks were observed.

The deflection and runout were observed within the limit.

Action taken by RA Power Solutions

The grinding of crank pins was undertaken and all the crank pins diameter was maintained within 0.4 mm.

Crankpin No.3 had deep bearing line marks due to the seizure of the crankpin bearing. The grinding of the crank pin to 0.6 mm was done which is the last size recommended by the engine manufacturer.

As per the manufacturers since the damage to the crankpin was more than the last limits specified Crankshaft stands rejected and the purchase of a new crankshaft was recommended.

To save the crankshaft from rejection, RA Power Solutions decided to continue the grinding of the crank pin to the undersize of 1.0 mm under deviation

The under-size bearing was supplied through one of our associate manufacturers of bearings. The engine was put into operation and has been performing satisfactorily for the last more than nine months.

Presence of cracks in the crank pin and main journal.

Observation of higher hardness due to the seizure of bearing.
