RA Power Solutions was called by a leading shipping company based in Baku, Azerbaijan, regarding a major breakdown in their auxiliary engine, a MAK 6M20, installed on the vessel.

The non-operation of two auxiliary engines stranded the vessel. Considering the urgency of the situation, RA Power Solutions deputed two technicians along with a specially designed onsite crankshaft grinding machine capable of grinding crankpins with small diameters and narrow widths.

In the case of the MAK 6M20 auxiliary engine, the standard diameter of the crankpin is only 152.00 mm, with a bearing width of 71 mm. The design of our onsite crankshaft grinding machine is such that it can be mounted on the crankpin diameter through the inspection window, and grinding is executed in situ.

The details of the engine are as follows:

Upon arrival on board the vessel, our technicians conducted an initial inspection of all crankpins. They found excessive ovality in all six crankpins of the MAK 6M20 engine.

All other parameters, including hardness, MPI, and deflection, were within acceptable limits. We jointly decided to grind all the crankpins, and RA Power Solutions machined them to a final size of 151.00 mm (1.00 mm undersize) as per the above dimensions.

During the stay of our technicians on board the vessel, the crankshaft of Auxiliary Engine #02 was also inspected. We detected excessive ovality showing the same pattern observed in the crankshaft of Auxiliary Engine 01.

Main observations of the crankshaft of Wartsila Vasa are :

(I) On a visual inspection of crankpin number one, having a standard diameter of 270 mm, it was found to be damaged with deep line marks, pitting, and a rough surface.

(II) The crankpin was subjected to dimensional inspection after cleaning the embedded bearing material. The following measurements were observed for Crankpin Number One:

Minimum Diameter: 269.45 mm

Maximum Diameter: 269.89 mm

Ovality Observed: 0.55 mm

(III) All other crankpins were visually inspected, and no damage or marks were observed.

(IV) As per standard procedure, Crankpin Number One was subjected to a crack detection test using the MPI process, and hardness testing was also carried out. No abnormalities were observed

(V) Crankpin Number One was undersized by on site crankshaft grinding equipment. The diameter was reduced by 1 mm to control ovality and to remove the line marks observed after the bearing seizure. The final crankpin diameter was maintained as 269.00 – 0.02 mm.

i) On the Visual Inspection of the crankpin and main journal of the crankshaft, the damage of bearing was clearly seen; in fact, the bearing material was also found in the oil sump.

It was decided to remove the crankshaft from the engine block in order to thoroughly inspect crankpin and main journal diameter of the crankshaft. The main journal housing also required thorough inspection for any cracks, deviation in the main journal housing bore, and the alignment of the housing.

ii) The crankshaft was placed on the “V” block, the design of which was made by our technicians.

iii) The inspection in detail was conducted, including dimensional inspection report, MPI test for crack detection, Hardness test etc.

iv) While all the major parameters were observed within the limit. The crankpin Number #05, having a standard diameter of 185.00 and Main Journal Number #10, having a standard diameter of 220.00 MM, had excessive ovality, The deep line marks were also observed.

Yanmar 6N18AL-UV crankshaft has a small diameter of 145.00 MM and a bearing width of only 64.00 MM, which requires a specially designed onsite crankshaft grinding machine. RA Power Solutions as a Manufacturer of onsite crankshaft grinding machines deputed two (2) technicians with the on site crankshaft grinding equipment and measuring instruments to repair the crankshaft.

Following are the Major Observations of the Damaged Crankshaft of Yanmar 6N18AL-UV

The crankpin number #02 was badly damaged due to the seizure of the bearing, the ovality more than 0.39 was observed. This crankpin due to seizure also had deep line marks.

All other parameters like hardness were observed within limits, and no cracks were found in the MPI test. The remaining Five (5) crankpins were also inspected and ovality up to 0.09 MM was observed.

Action Taken By RA Power Solutions to Repair the Yanmar 6N18AL-UV Crankshaft

Crankpin number #02 was ground to the third (3rd) undersize of 143.40 mm, thus reducing the diameter of the crankpin by 1.60 MM.

All other crankpins were polished by our specialized onsite crankshaft grinding and polishing equipment to remove the rough surface, line marks, etc.

Supply of Undersize Crankpin Bearings

RA Power Solutions technicians carried with them two (2) pairs each of 1.20 MM, 1.60 MM and 2.00 MM bearings. This helped the ship staff to assemble the engine immediately after grinding, they used 1.60 MM undersize crankpin bearings.

This facilitated them to immediately operate the Auxiliary Engine after crankshaft repair onsite was executed by RA Power Solutions technicians.
