On inspection of the crankshaft, the following were the main observations

On the visual inspection of crankpin no. 1 having a standard diameter of 140 mm and bearing width of 62 mm, it was observed that the big end bearing failed and bearing material got embedded on the crankpin no.1 journal surface.

The crank pin journal surface had multiple bearing line marks, was rough, and was severely scored.

The radius fillet of both sides was damaged losing its original profile.

Considering this to be a serious accident, all the connecting rods were disassembled and crank pins were subject to thorough inspection by our technicians.

No deviations were observed in other crankpins on dimensional inspection.

The hardness of crankpin no.1 was checked after removing the bearing from the crankpin journal which got embedded due to seizure of the bearing and observed within a limit.

The crack detection test was done by a high-intensity magna flux torch and MPI equipment.

No abnormality or cracks were observed.

This was a big relief to our technicians as considering the serious nature of the accident, surface cracks in crank pin no. 1 were expected.

Deflection of the crankshaft was taken and was observed within limits.

Following are the Readings Observed

The Crankpin no.1 was subject to dimensional inspection and the following readings were observed.

Crankpin no. 1, Minimum diameter observed before repair – 139.50 mm

Crankpin no. 1, Maximum diameter observed before repair – 139.88 mm

Total ovality observed – 0.50 mm, considering the standard diameter of 140 mm.

Crankpin Repair Undertaken by RA Power Solutions for Successful Operation of Crankshaft of Yanmar S185L-ST Engine

Initially, the crank pin having a standard diameter of 140 mm and bearing width of only 62 mm was ground to 0.50 mm under size with the hope the scratches and deep line marks would be removed.

Since even after grinding 0.50 mm, the deep line marks were visible, it was decided to undersize the crank pin further by 0.5 mm.

Finally, Crankpin no. 1 was Ground to 1 mm Undersize, and Dimensions Were Maintained as Following After Grinding

Minimum diameter observed after grinding – 138.98 mm

Maximum diameter observed after grinding – 139.00 mm

Maximum ovality observed – 0.02 mm

The undersized bearing of 1 mm was supplied by RA Power Solutions from their stock and the engine was put back into operation.

Repair of Diesel Engines Services are operated continuously irrespective of its application whether they are installed in diesel power plants, heavy industry, or on ships. The maintenance schedule of the diesel engine is followed in most of cases as per the engine manufacturer’s manual. The dedicated team of technicians and engineers takes care of day to day maintenance and operation of the engine. Despite all the precautions taken, it is observed that major accidents in crankshafts take place, few of the reasons are as follows.

Crankshaft Failure

Use of nonstandard lubricating oil or using it for an extended time without changing it.

Use of bearings beyond the operating hours specified in the maintenance manual of the engine manufacturer.

Use of substandard lubricating oil filters and using them beyond the specified hours.

Not maintaining the lubricating oil temperature and oil gap as per the maintenance manual.

Use of substandard quality bearings.

Not carrying out the periodical inspection of the crankshaft at the time of undertaking maintenance.

Non-calibration of crankpin and main journal diameter for taper and ovality.

Ignoring of crankpin and main journal line marks, pitting, rough surface.

Increase in deflection readings.

Non-replacement of connecting rods in case of abnormalities observed.

Non-calibration of connecting rods big end bore and small end bore.

Non-inspection of connecting rods, bolts for cracks or distortion, and tightening torque.

As mentioned the crankshaft failure can be caused due to not paying attention to the above.

It was reported by Dubai Dubai-based company that one of their vessel which was sailing near Chittagong port had met with an accident and the crankshaft was damaged. RA Power Solutions. deputed two technicians along with necessary tooling to Chittagong. They boarded the vessel in a short time of 12 hours after receiving the first communication of the breakdown. This was possible as all our technicians have valid Indian CDC.

Ongoing through the above dimensions, owners were surprised as the damage to the crankpins was beyond the last limit stipulated by the engine manufacturer i.e. MAN Diesel for Engine Model no. CME 5L 16/24. In other words as per the manufacturer, there was no solution but to reject the crankshaft and replace it with a new one.

RA Power Solutions took the following action to save the crankshaft from rejection

Based on the above readings of crankpin no. 2 and crankpin no. 4, it was decided to undersize the crankpin to 1.5 mm and 2 mm from the standard diameter of 130 mm.

The grinding was undertaken by our technicians and the final diameter of 128.50 and 128.00 mm was maintained.

The undersized crankpin bearings of 1.5 mm and 2 mm were arranged by RA Power Solutions.

The MAN Diesel Engine Model no. CME 5L 16/24 was commissioned and the engine is performing satisfactorily.

The under-sizing of the crankpin up to 2 mm is of course done under deviation and against the manufacturer’s recommendation but the fact is that the crankshaft has been successfully repaired and is saved from rejection which helped the owners of the vessel to save a considerable amount and downtime. We at RA Power Solutions always believe in saving the crankshaft from rejection. The cost of the crankshaft is exorbitant and has no justification by the engine and crankshaft manufacturer who enjoy the monopoly.

RA Power Solutions suggests not engaging companies with no expertise and specialized equipment for the repair of the crankshaft. We have the knowledge, experience, and necessary equipment to undertake the repair.

Crankpin Repair Services

We observed that companies avoid crankpin repair due to the time taken to repair of crankpin and the high cost. This was true as few companies based in Europe and Singapore enjoyed the monopoly and charged exorbitantly for crankpin repair. With the introduction of onsite crankpin repair and main journal repair machine, it is now possible to undertake the crankpin and main journal grinding and polishing in minimal time.

Secondly, the cost of crankpin repair charged by RA Power Solutions is almost one-fourth of the charges of European and other companies. In simple language, crankpin repair has become easy with a low cost.
