RA Power Solutions was called by a leading shipping company based in Baku, Azerbaijan, regarding a major breakdown in their auxiliary engine, a MAK 6M20, installed on the vessel.

The non-operation of two auxiliary engines stranded the vessel. Considering the urgency of the situation, RA Power Solutions deputed two technicians along with a specially designed onsite crankshaft grinding machine capable of grinding crankpins with small diameters and narrow widths.

In the case of the MAK 6M20 auxiliary engine, the standard diameter of the crankpin is only 152.00 mm, with a bearing width of 71 mm. The design of our onsite crankshaft grinding machine is such that it can be mounted on the crankpin diameter through the inspection window, and grinding is executed in situ.

The details of the engine are as follows:

Upon arrival on board the vessel, our technicians conducted an initial inspection of all crankpins. They found excessive ovality in all six crankpins of the MAK 6M20 engine.

All other parameters, including hardness, MPI, and deflection, were within acceptable limits. We jointly decided to grind all the crankpins, and RA Power Solutions machined them to a final size of 151.00 mm (1.00 mm undersize) as per the above dimensions.

During the stay of our technicians on board the vessel, the crankshaft of Auxiliary Engine #02 was also inspected. We detected excessive ovality showing the same pattern observed in the crankshaft of Auxiliary Engine 01.

RA Power Solutions’ technicians arrived at the site near Tehran and inspected the crankshaft of the Caterpillar G3616. The following are the main observations:

(i) The crankpin bearing of Number #03 was severely stuck to the crankpin surface. The top layer of the bearing had melted and become embedded in the crankpin diameter.

(ii) The bearing material embedded in the crankpin surface was removed to facilitate inspection for hardness, presence of cracks, and dimensional accuracy.

(iii) The minimum and maximum crankpin diameters observed are as follows:

(a) Minimum diameter: 214.93 mm

(b) Maximum diameter: 216.00 mm

Against the standard diameter of 216.00 mm, an ovality of 1.07 mm was observed

(iv) Minor surface cracks were also observed during the MPI (Magnetic Particle Inspection).

(v) Hardness was found to be within acceptable limits, except at a few spots.

Saving of Caterpillar G3616 Crankshaft From Rejection

Based on the fact that the ovality in crankpin number #03 was observed to be 1.07 mm, an inquiry was sent to the manufacturer. The manufacturer informed us that the maximum allowable undersize for the crankpin is 1.00 mm, meaning the minimum acceptable diameter must be 215.00 mm. In this case, since the damage had already reached 1.07 mm, the crankshaft is considered rejected, as per the manufacturer’s guidelines. In this case, the expected undersize after grinding was 2.00 mm, which is beyond the permissible limit.

RA Power Solutions has undertaken onsite grinding of Crankpin Number #03, reducing its size by 2.00 mm, and the following dimensions were maintained after grinding:

a) Minimum diameter observed: 213.98 mm

b) Maximum diameter observed: 214.00 mm

In today’s fast-paced industrial environment, equipment downtime directly affects productivity and profits. For industries that depend heavily on large engines, like marine, power plants, and heavy manufacturing, waiting days or even weeks to remove and transport a damaged crankshaft for repairs is no longer practical. This is where on site crankshaft repair offers a game-changing solution.

Efficient Repairs, Delivered On Site

On site crankshaft repair eliminates the need to dismantle and ship large engine components. Instead, skilled technicians bring precision tools and advanced equipment directly to your location. Whether on a vessel at sea, an offshore platform, or a remote industrial plant, repairs are carried out in situ with the same accuracy as workshop-based service. This significantly reduces engine downtime and associated logistics costs.

Common crankshaft issues such as journal wear, scoring, taper, ovality, cracks, or bearing damage can now be rectified on site. By machining and grinding crankpins or main journals without removing the crankshaft, repairs can be completed in a fraction of the time. The portable equipment used is engineered to deliver high-precision results, often within tolerances of a few microns. Once the machining is done, final checks like hardness testing, alignment inspection, and surface finish measurement ensure the crankshaft is restored to OEM standards.

Onsite Inspection of Crankshaft – BERGEN B32:40L8P

Two of our experienced technicians, along with our portable onsite crankshaft grinding equipment, traveled from New Delhi, India, to Jamaica.

Our equipment is lightweight, compact, and portable, allowing it to be transported as accompanied baggage, which eliminates delays associated with cargo shipment and customs clearance.

Upon boarding, the vessel was found fully loaded with containers, yet our team immediately initiated the crankshaft inspection.

It was observed that Crankpin No. 5 had suffered severe damage due to a bearing failure.

The crankpin was thoroughly cleaned, and embedded bearing material was carefully removed.

Dimensional checks revealed:

Minimum Diameter: 269.75 mm

Maximum Diameter: 270.00 mm

Ovality: 0.25 mm

Deep scoring marks were also noted due to the bearing failure.

A Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) using a high-intensity Magnaflux torch was conducted to check for cracks. No cracks or abnormalities were detected.

Hardness testing was performed, and confirmed that values remained within permissible limits.

The Auxiliary engine number #02 of MAN B&W 5L 16/24 was stopped due to low air pressure, two of our technicians boarded the vessel and inspected the crankshaft. All Five (5) crankpins having a standard diameter of 130.00 MM had ovality ranging from 0.10 MM to 0.40 MM, which is considered to be on the higher side. The crankpins also had bearing line marks, rough surfaces, and localized damage, as the engine was operated in spite of the problem in the crankshaft.

The main advantage of onsite crankshaft grinding jobs executed by RA Power Solutions is that the technicians and equipment are trained and designed to execute the job even while sailing of the vessel. There was absolutely no requirement of holding of the vessel. RA Power Solutions also supplied the undersized crankpin bearings for this engine and it was commissioned in a short notice.

RA Power Solutions with experience of more than 44 years extends onsite crankshaft grinding services to leading shipping companies, power plants and heavy industries all over the world.

iii) On going through the readings, it was observed that the crankpin number #02 has developed excessive ovality of 0.43 MM, against the tolerance of 260.00 MM + 0.03 MM. This is considered very much on the higher side. All other crankpins also have ovality ranging from 0.09 MM to 0.10 MM, The bearing line marks and rough surface on the crankpin were observed.

iv) As a Protocol, hardness was checked of eight (8 Nos) Crankpins and was observed within limits.

v) Crack detection was also conducted, and no crack was observed on damaged crankpin number #02 and other crankpins.

vi) It was jointly decided to undertake the grinding of crankpin number #02 and polishing the remaining crankpins to remove the bearing line marks and to improve the surface finish.

vii) Although in the crankpin numbers #01,#03,#04,#05,#06,#07, and #08 the ovality was observed on the higher side as 0.10 MM, however, this was accepted under divation.

viii) The Crankpin number #02 was undersized by 1.5 MM, A Final Dimensional Report after grinding and polishing of crankpins of Yanmar 8N 330L EV is pasted below.
