Details of Inspection of Yanmar Engine 8N280L crankshaft undertaken by RA Power Solutions technicians on board the vessel.

The vessel reported damage to two crankpins due to the failure of the oil pump initially two crankpins were inspected and ovality ranging from 0.23 to 0.30 mm was found.

Since it was a failure of lubricating the oil pump decision was taken to open the connecting rods of the remaining six crankpins and inspect them by taper & ovality.

On inspection of the remaining six crankpins, it was observed that all the crankpins had excessive ovality higher than the permissible limits stipulated in the Yanmar Engine manufacturer manual.

The bearing line marks a rough surface was also observed.

The hardness was checked with the portable hardness tester and was observed within limits except for the few scattered high hardness spots.

MPI for crack detection was also done and no cracks were observed.

The radius fillet of all eight crankpins was checked.

In case two crankpin radius fillet profiles were damaged. The reading observed of eight crankpins before grinding is as follows.

As can be seen from above the crankpin diameter is only 140 mm with a bearing length of 72 mm. Most of the companies undertaking onsite repair of crankshaft don’t have the equipment to undertake onsite grinding & polishing of crankpins having 140 mm diameter & 72 mm bearing width which is considered to be small.

RA Power Solutions has the equipment, technology, and process to undertake the grinding & polishing repair of crankpins having a small diameter and crankpin width of as low as 50 mm and has successfully repaired and saved thousands of crankshafts from rejection. Our two technicians boarded the vessel at Mundra Port India and executed the repairs by grinding the crankpin up to 2.0 mm undersize.

Ready Availability of Undersize Crank Pin Bearing for Yanmar S185L Engine and other make engines

Understanding the importance of timely availability of undersize crankpin bearings required after grinding, RA Power Solutions maintains a stock of undersize crankpin Bearings up to 2.0 mm. In most cases, our technicians travel to the site with undersized bearings. This avoids the delay in the commissioning of the engine.

A leading shipping company based in Saudi Arabia reported a serious accident of their auxiliary engine no. 2 of Yanmar S185L-ST used as a generator. A team consisting of two technicians along with necessary calibrated instruments and an onsite crankshaft grinding machine boarded the vessel to assess the damage to the engine and to undertake crankshaft repairs.

On inspection of the crankshaft, the following were the main observations

On the visual inspection of crankpin no. 1 having a standard diameter of 140 mm and bearing width of 62 mm, it was observed that the big end bearing failed and bearing material got embedded on the crankpin no.1 journal surface.

The crank pin journal surface had multiple bearing line marks, was rough, and was severely scored.

The radius fillet of both sides was damaged losing its original profile.

Considering this to be a serious accident, all the connecting rods were disassembled and crank pins were subject to thorough inspection by our technicians.

No deviations were observed in other crankpins on dimensional inspection.

The hardness of crankpin no.1 was checked after removing the bearing from the crankpin journal which got embedded due to seizure of the bearing and observed within a limit.

The crack detection test was done by a high-intensity magna flux torch and MPI equipment.

No abnormality or cracks were observed.

This was a big relief to our technicians as considering the serious nature of the accident, surface cracks in crank pin no. 1 were expected.

Deflection of the crankshaft was taken and was observed within limits.

Following are the Readings Observed

The Crankpin no.1 was subject to dimensional inspection and the following readings were observed.

Crankpin no. 1, Minimum diameter observed before repair – 139.50 mm

Crankpin no. 1, Maximum diameter observed before repair – 139.88 mm

Total ovality observed – 0.50 mm, considering the standard diameter of 140 mm.

Crankpin Repair Undertaken by RA Power Solutions for Successful Operation of Crankshaft of Yanmar S185L-ST Engine

Initially, the crank pin having a standard diameter of 140 mm and bearing width of only 62 mm was ground to 0.50 mm under size with the hope the scratches and deep line marks would be removed.

Since even after grinding 0.50 mm, the deep line marks were visible, it was decided to undersize the crank pin further by 0.5 mm.

Finally, Crankpin no. 1 was Ground to 1 mm Undersize, and Dimensions Were Maintained as Following After Grinding

Minimum diameter observed after grinding – 138.98 mm

Maximum diameter observed after grinding – 139.00 mm

Maximum ovality observed – 0.02 mm

The undersized bearing of 1 mm was supplied by RA Power Solutions from their stock and the engine was put back into operation.

It is observed that the crankshaft repair companies based in Europe, UK, and Singapore do not have the facilities and necessary equipment to undertake onsite grinding and polishing of small crankpin diameters and small bearing widths. The grinding of a small diameter crankpin and the bearing width requires a grinding tool that is compact enough to be placed on the crankpin journal. For example – a Crankpin has a diameter of 130 mm and, a bearing width of 56 mm. Complete tooling is required to be inserted from the limited space available of the engine block window and has to be placed on the crankpin bearing width.

Due to the non-availability of tooling with the leading crankshaft engine repair companies, they generally advise removing the crankshaft from the engine block and sending it to the workshop for grinding and polishing purposes. We have observed in some cases even advice for replacement of the crankshaft is also given. This suggestion works out to be very expensive and time-consuming, especially in this time of recession.

Compact onsite crankshaft grinding machine designed by RA Power Solutions

RA Power Solutions Pvt. Ltd. Is the only company in the world that designs and manufactures its crankshaft grinding machines in technical collaboration with a leading Italian company.

The grinding machine manufactured by us can easily grind onsite even with a small diameter of 35 mm and a bearing width of 25 mm. This is a technological revolution and advancement done by RA Power Solutions engineers out of their experience, knowledge, and passion to do something new and different.

It’s our business to undertake regular grinding and polishing of crankshafts all over the world. We are sharing below details of a few engine crankshafts that got damaged and were successfully repaired by us. On going through the crankpin diameter and crankpin bearing width, one will observe that they are quite small.

The team of RA Power Solutions technicians was sent on board the vessel which was sailing near the SUEZ canal on-boarding the vessel, the inspection of the crankshaft was conducted, and the following observations were made.

All the crankpins having a diameter of 145 mm and bearing width of only 65 mm had bearing line marks, pitting, taper, and ovality ranging from 0.16 to 0.28.

The crankpin hardness and crack detection by MPI were done and no abnormality was observed.

The deflection readings were observed within limits.

It was decided to undertake the grinding of all the crankpins to the next undersize of 0.40 mm. All the crankpin diameter was maintained at 144.60 mm.

The engine was assembled and load trials were taken.
